Resume format for freshers: one page, in this order

The best resume format for freshers is one page, one column, newest first: header, an optional one-line objective, education, projects, internships, skills and achievements. Without work experience, your projects and internships do the job that experience does on other resumes, so they go near the top and every line says what you built and how well it works.

What goes in each section

In this order, top to bottom. Leave out a section rather than fill it with weak lines.

SectionWhat to writeLeave out
HeaderName, phone, email, city, and links that help: LinkedIn, GitHub, a portfolio or a coding profile.Photo, date of birth, marital status, father's name and full address. They take space and aren't needed to judge you.
Objective (optional)One or two lines: the role you want and your strongest proof for it."Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation…" It says nothing about you.
EducationDegree, college, years and CGPA (if it's above the usual cut-off). Class XII and X marks in one line each if the employer asks for them.Every school you attended and long lists of courses.
Projects2–3 projects: what you built, the tools, and a number (users, speed, accuracy). Link the code or a demo.Tutorial clones described only by name ("To-do app using React").
InternshipsCompany, role, dates and 1–3 bullets on what you shipped and who used it."Learned a lot about the industry."
SkillsGrouped lines: languages, frameworks, tools, and core subjects you can be interviewed on.Skill bars, star ratings, and "MS Office" for a technical role.
AchievementsHackathon wins, coding contest ranks, scholarships, leadership roles with what you did.Participation certificates from short online courses, unless they're directly relevant.

Fresher with no experience? What replaces it

Recruiters hiring freshers don't expect jobs. They look for proof you can do the work. These count, roughly in order of weight:

  1. Projects with results: a deployed app with users, an analysis with a finding, a model compared against a baseline.
  2. Internships, even 6–8 weeks: what you shipped and who used it.
  3. Coding profiles and contests: LeetCode or Codeforces ratings, hackathon results.
  4. Leadership and responsibility: running a college club or event, with what you did and how many people it reached.

Write each one as a bullet that starts with what you did and ends with a result: “Built a real-time chat app with React and Node.js that handled 200 concurrent users in load tests” beats “Made a chat app using MERN stack”.

Resume objective examples for freshers

An objective is optional. If you use one, name the role and your best proof, in one or two lines:

  • Computer science graduate (CGPA 8.6) looking for a software engineering role; built a real-time chat app with React and Node.js that handled 200 concurrent users.
  • Final-year B.Tech student seeking a data analyst role; I analysed 2M rows of air-quality data with SQL and Python and published the findings in a Tableau dashboard.
  • BCA graduate applying for frontend developer roles; shipped a React portfolio site and a store front-end with a 95 Lighthouse performance score.

Mistakes that cost freshers interviews

  • Two-column or graphic templates: screening software can read the columns in the wrong order. One column is safest.
  • Two pages of filler: cut weak lines until it fits on one.
  • The same resume for every job: reorder projects and skills to match each job post, using its words where they're true.
  • Vague claims (“hardworking, quick learner”): replace them with something you did.
  • Typos and a messy file name: save it as Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf.

Questions freshers ask

What is the best resume format for freshers?
A one-page, single-column, reverse-chronological resume: header, an optional one-line objective, education, projects, internships, skills and achievements. Avoid the functional (skills-only) format; recruiters and screening software both read it poorly.
Should a fresher resume be one page?
Yes. With no full-time experience, one page is enough for everything that matters, and recruiters at placement drives expect it.
Should I put my photo, date of birth or marital status on my resume?
No, unless an employer specifically asks. They aren't used to judge your skills, take space, and can invite bias.
Should freshers include 10th and 12th marks?
Many Indian employers and campus drives ask for them, so add them compactly under Education. Put your degree and CGPA first.
What should a fresher with no experience put on a resume?
Projects, internships (even short ones), hackathons, coding profiles, relevant coursework and achievements. A project with real users or measurable results counts as experience.
Should I send my resume as PDF or Word?
PDF, unless the job portal or employer asks for Word. A PDF looks the same on every screen and modern applicant tracking systems read its text fine. fastcv gives you a free PDF and the LaTeX source; it doesn't make Word files.
